MS are pissing me off left, right and center recently! This rant pertains to issues with Windows Mobile Device Center 6.1 and Windows Live OneCare 1.6 The basic issue is this: when you plug a device into your computer, for some reason it interferes with whatever network you're connected to (might be due to the fact that since WM5, WM devices are classed as "network adapters", not "USB devices" ) and OneCare then changes the firewall settings from "Automatic" to "Restricted", stopping the device from syncing. If you open the "Network and Sharing Center" while plugging in a device, you'll notice the network you're connected to suddenly starts saying "identifying..". This is the bit where OneCare thinks you're on an unsecured network and locks you down...ghey. Why? God knows! I'm yet to figure that bit out but for the moment, here's a work around: open up OneCare, select "Change OneCare settings" (on the left) then go to the "Firewall" tab. Then, under "Other settings", untick "Automatically change my firewall protection level...". Unplug/plugin your device and all should be well, assuming you have allowed WMDC in the firewall in the first place that is ;) (Click the "firewall connection tool" button and make sure Activesync/WMDC is ticked). No, it's not a great method but until either a) they fix the issue or b) i can figure out how to stop WM devices interfering when connecting, it'll have to do :( UPDATE:  I've found a way round it and it's so easy anyone can do it! What is it? Install OneCare Beta 2.0 :D
